Blank

Blank – a standard containing none of the analytes of interest, ideally made with the same acid as the other solutions in the analysis, typically used for calibration. There are a few types of blank solutions:

  • Calibration Blank - used to create a ‘zero’ point on the calibration curve, as no analytes are present in solution.
  • Reagent Blank – made from the same reagents used to dissolve the analyte material into solution. The readings from this blank will be subtracted from the readings of solutions containing analytes to correct for interferences or impurities present in reagents being used.
  • Method Blank – made from the same reagents, stored in similar containers and conditions, and analyzed with the same procedure being used in the method in order to detect any potential issues with the process such as contamination, transpiration effects, or container compatibility (some acids may deteriorate and leach elements from container walls, for example).
