Ashing – heating a sample to remove organic carbon and volatile species to leave behind non-combustible material.

• Results in the thinning of sample along with concentration of elements present – making analysis easier.
• Often a first step in analysis of inorganic material in organic samples (such as heavy metals in plant or soil material).
