It’s not technically possible to create an artificial seawater “without trace metals”. The best that can be achieved is a solution where specified trace metals are below the detection limit of the testing method employed. Natural seawater is remarkably pure with respect to many trace metals (e.g., dissolved Fe concentrations are typically 10-50 parts-per-trillion), and as such represents a very challenging solution to replicate. The best approximation we currently have is a purified Na material stabilized in HCl which could be diluted and combined with other major components (Ca, Mg, SO4, etc.), but even by itself the Na(HCl) material contains ppb levels of Fe and detection limits for most trace metals of 0.5 – 10 ppb. As a rough estimate we could probably mimic natural seawater with many trace elements present at ~10 ppb concentrations or higher and with detection limits for other trace elements of 5-10 ppb. If the client could specify which elements are most critical and their acceptable concentration limits we could offer more detailed information. |
