Measurement and Results - Chloride (Cl) analyses using ICP-OES
I am inquiring about chloride analysis by ICP-OES. My experience is that chloride is usually analyzed by ion selective electrode or by ion chromatography. I am trying to figure out if I can analyze chloride using our Shimadzu ICPE-9810. I have a call in to Shimadzu, but you all have been very helpful to me in the past so I wanted to put the question out for you.
Thank you.

Routine ICP-OES analyses of halogens such as Cl, Br, and I are certainly possible, but only if your instrument can measure well into the vacuum UV (deep ultraviolet) portion of the spectrum below about 190 nM, and the manufacturer has confirmed that this particular model has a low wavelength limit of 187 nm. A quick reference for halogen analyses by ICP is that also might prove useful is available at Spectroscopy Online (http://www.spectroscopyonline.com/determination-halogen-elements-aqueous-organic-and-solid-samples-using-icp-oes). |
