In the USA, the Safe Drinking Water Act allows states to set and enforce their drinking water standards, as long as the standards are as stringent as the EPA standards at a minimum. The Safe Drinking Water Act was first in 1974, and EPA standards are used to monitor states, local authorities, and water suppliers. EPA standards outline maximum contaminant levels, as well as treatment requirements for contaminants in public drinking water.
The EPA standards for safe water only applied to the public water system, not bottled water. Bottled water is regulated by the food and drug association.
