Measurement and Results - Variable mercury (Hg) results using ICP-OES

Do you know why Hg results by ICP-OES are not reliable? The same sample will generate different concentration values on different days....?

Mercury can give different results due to a number of factors, including matrix, container material, and mixing with other elements. If your Hg ICP results are consistently higher than expected and variable, then Hg reduction may be occurring in the solution, leading to enhanced nebulization efficiency. This effect can be counteracted by adding HNO3 and heating the solution. More information regarding Hg stability can be found athttp://www.inorganicventures.com/guides-and-papers, and some common issues observed with Hg are discussed at http://www.inorganicventures.com/common-problems-hg-au-si-os-and-na.
