Measurement and Results - Rare earth interferences for ICP-OES analyses

First off- Thanks so much to maintaining such a helpful website! I only purchase ICP standards from you guys, largely because I appreciate this website so much. Ok, now my question. What is a 2nd order radiation from R.E.s as described for some elements on your Interactive Periodic Table? This is for ICP-OES determinations (specifically i'm looking at Sodium (Na) lines).

The “R.E.s” in this instance refer to rare earth elements, which generate complex emission spectra, particularly on some ICP-OES designs. The order of the radiation refers to “diffracted orders” or “orders of diffraction” which correspond to emission maxima occurring at specific diffraction angles. In short, if your samples have lots of rare earth elements, then certain optical designs can be problematic for Na analyses.
