Chemical Stability and Compatibility - Osmium (Os) and nitric acid
I see that on the bottle for Osmium standards it states do not mix with nitric acid. I was aware of this; however, I was wondering if you could find out if there is a problem with 4% HNO3 and the standard?

Low levels of nitric acid (<2 molar) have almost no oxidizing capability and therefore should not convert Os to the volatile tetroxide form (see http://inorganicventures.com/acid-digestions-inorganic-samples for more information about HNO3). A 4% (v/v) solution of HNO3 should not present any concerns but we would suggest conducting stability studies specific to your application to confirm this. |
