Sample Preparation - Non-HF digestions for refractory solids (SiC or Al2O3)

Do you have any advice on dissolving materials like SiC or Al2O3, without using HF acid for ICP-OES analysis?

We suggest using a Na2CO3 fusion in a platinum crucible at 1000 C for these samples. For SiC (silicon carbide), 40 mg of sample and 2 g Na2CO3 is recommended. The same should be fine for alumina (Al2O3). There are numerous fusion types to choose from, but we suggest Na2CO3 fusions as they are effective, safe, and high purity sodium carbonate is readily available. The use of other fusion types will depend on crucible availability and the types of interferences the analyst is willing to accept due to varying degrees of cleanliness of fusion reagents. Please see our Trace Analysis Guide (https://www.inorganicventures.com/sample-preparation-fusion) for more information on common types of fusions. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
