Chemical Stability and Compatibility - Mercury (Hg) preservation at low (<100 ppm) concentrations

Can you please explain the reason why Hg (concentration <100 ppm) should stored in borosilicate glass if the matrix is HNO3? Is the main reason the adsorption of Hg on the wall of plastic containers? Do you recommend Hg in HCl?

Yes, you are correct that Hg adsorption on the walls of plastic containers when HNO3 is the matrix is the reason why we recommend using borosilicate glass for Hg concentrations below ~100 ppm. We have not observed this issue when the matrix is HCl, and frequently recommend a combination of an HCl matrix (~10% v/v) and plastic containers for Hg standards with concentrations below 100 ppm.
